    2019 University Human Rights Week Successfully Completed (ka)

    From December 2-10, with the support of USAID/PROLoG, Free University Tbilisi and fourteen other Georgian law schools, including two regional universities, organized the annual University Human Rights Week.  Human Rights Week is an annual event that celebrates December 10 as Human Right Day and aims to disseminate knowledge among students and the younger generation.

    Public Discussion on Women in the Military (ka)

    On December 9 the USAID/PROLoG-supported Human Rights Chair at ILIA State University Law School organized a public discussion on Women in the Military Field. Speakers included US military attaché in Georgia, Colonel Stephanie Bagley and Tamar Karosanidze, Chief of Party for the USAID-funded program Advancing CSO Capacities and Engaging Society in Sustainability (ACESS), and a former Deputy Defense Minister of Georgia. A public discussion was moderated by ILIA State University Rector, Giga Zedania.

    Judicial Exchange (JudEx) Alumni Judge Shorena Tsikaridze met Students from Civics Clubs (ka)

    On November 27th, Tbilisi City Court Judge Shorena Tsikaridze met around fifty students from Civics Clubs at Public School No.177.

    The meeting was organized by USAID/PROLoG in cooperation with USAID funded Momavlis Taoba Project, implemented by PH International.

    GYLA presents findings of the report on June 20-21 events (ka)

    On November 27, the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) presented a legal assessment of the June 20-21 events. The report, developed with the support from USAID/PROLoG, looks into human rights violations during and after the dispersal of the rally. Based on a comprehensive analysis GYLA found that the application of force against participants was unlawful and disproportionate to the threats posed. Numerous cases of physical and verbal abuse by law enforcement officers were reported, including inhuman treatment of arrested individuals. The rights of media professionals were also violated. The Ministry of Internal Affairs massively and indiscriminately arrested protesters, and, as a result, 121 individuals were subjected to detention, the strictest administrative sanction.

    USAID/PROLoG Supports National Moot Court Competition on Legal Ethics (ka)

    From November 22-24, the USAID/PROLoG-funded Legal Ethics Chair at New Vision University organized the second National Moot Court Competition on Legal Ethics. Twenty-seven students from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, University of Georgia, New Vision and Sulkhan Saba University took part.

    USAID/PROLoG Expert Judge Conducts Shadowing of Georgian Judges in Batumi (ka)

    On November 9-18, USAID/PROLoG brought a former U.S. judge, Jesse Goode, from Washington DC to Georgia for a fourth shadowing visit. USAID/PROLoG has organized similar visits to Tbilisi, Rustavi and Kutaisi in the past year.

    USAID/PROLoG supports conference on freedom of expression and hate speech, organized by Transparency International Georgia (ka)

    On November 1, Transparency International Georgia held a conference, “Hate Speech – Challenges and International Experience,” supported by USAID/PROLoG and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. Elizabeth Rood, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. of the US Embassy and Nino Goguadze, First Deputy Chairperson of the Parliament Foreign Relations Committee, opened the conference, which was dedicated to the problem of hate speech and risks associated with its regulation by the state. USAID/PROLoG brought Jason C. DeSanto, Senior Lecturer from Northwestern University, to talk about the US standards for the protection of freedom of expression and contemporary challenges caused by hate speech, fake news, and defamation of public officials.

    USAID/PROLoG Supports Workshop on Communication Skills for Constitutional Court Staff (ka)

    On October 30, USAID/PROLoG organized a one-day workshop for staff of the Constitutional Court of Georgia on effective communication skills. Professor Jason DeSanto from Northwestern University (Chicago, USA) conducted the workshop. Prof. DeSanto has more than 15 years of experience as a political speechwriter and a debate strategist, having assisted U.S Senators, members of Congress, and several American presidential campaigns. Effectively communicating court judgments to a wider public is essential to strengthening the rule of law. During the workshop, Prof. DeSanto talked about public persuasion and advocacy, as well as public speaking. The workshop was attended by employees of the press office, protocol and public relations, international relations, legal and analytical departments.

    USAID/PROLoG Organizes a Study Tour for Georgian Mentor Judges to Boston, Massachusetts (ka)

    From October 26 to November 2, USAID/PROLoG organized a study tour for Georgian mentor judges and the Director of the High School of Justice of Georgia (HSOJ) to Boston, Massachusetts. The goal of the tour was to study the Massachusetts judicial mentoring system and improve mentoring of judicial listeners in Georgia.

    During the visit, participants were first introduced to the judicial system of Massachusetts at one of the leading U.S. law firms, Kirkland & Ellis. The delegation then visited the Judicial Institute, a Massachusetts training center for trial court judges, and discussed the in-service training opportunities with the Director, Ellen O’Connor, Kate Dulit and other representatives of the Institute.

    საია-მ სისხლის სამართლის პროცესების მონიტორინგის მიგნებები წარადგინა

    9 ოქტომბერს, საქართველოს ახალგაზრდა იურისტთა ასოციაციამ (საია) რიგით მე-13 სისხლის სამართლის პროცესების მონიტორინგის ანგარიში წარადგინა, რომელიც 2018 წლის მარტიდან 2019 წლის მარტამდე პერიოდს მოიცავს. მონიტორინგი ხორციელდება თბილისის, ქუთაისის, ბათუმის, გორისა და თელავის სასამართლოებში EWMI-PROLoG-ის მხარდაჭერით.
