    Free University Tbilisi Hosts Online Presentation of Amicus Briefs

    On October 20, 2020, in the framework of the USAID/PROLoG funded grant, Free University of Tbilisi Law School (FreeUni) hosted the online presentation of 2 amicus curiae (“friend of the Court”) briefs. For several years, FreeUni, in cooperation with the Washburn University School of Law (WUSL), has worked on amicus curiae briefs submitted to the Constitutional Court of Georgia.

    PHR Webinar on Children and Media

    On October 15, Partnership for Human Rights (PHR), under the USAID/PROLoG-funded project “Strengthening Child Access to Justice in Georgia,” hosted a second webinar on “Children and Media.” Members of Children’s Advisory Council, created by PHR, attended. Nata Dzvelishvili, Director of Indigo Publishing, and former executive director at Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics, participated as a guest speaker, with Nana Gochiashvili, PHR representative, moderating the discussion.

    USAID/PROLoG Supports Promotion of Gender Equality in Georgia

    On October 7, the USAID/PROLoG supported Gender and the Law Chair of Tbilisi State University organized an online public lecture on US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Professional Who Changed Legal Environment for Gender Equality. Ms. Laura Berger, the Deputy Director of USAID’s Democracy, Governance, and Social Development Office, and Ms. Ketevan Khutsishvili, Gender and the Law Chair, made opening statements. The event celebrated the life of Justice Ginsburg as an outstanding promoter of rule of law, justice and equality. Ms. Khutsishvili spoke about Justice Ginsburg’s landmark cases, including the principles she developed in her early career and advanced in her capacity as the second and at times the only female judge to serve on the US Supreme Court.

    USAID/PROLoG Supports Development of GBA’s Educational Portal

    On October 9, Georgian Bar Association, in cooperation with USAID/PROLoG, organized a public presentation for GBA members and partner organization representatives of the newly developed GBA’s Educational Portal, which was created with USAID/PROLoG’s funding and helps the GBA Training Center to provide improved CLE opportunities to its member lawyers.

    USAID/PROLoG Supports First Meeting of the Justice Coordination Council (Bench & Bar)

    On October 2, USAID/PROLoG, in cooperation with the Council of Europe, supported the first meeting of the Justice Coordination Council (Bench & Bar) concerning jury trials. Nino Kadagidze, Chairperson of the Supreme Court, Irakli Shotadze, General Prosecutor and David Asatiani, Chairman of Georgian Bar Association attended the meeting. Adam Schmidt, the Director of Democracy, Governance & Social Development at USAID, addressed the participants, underlining the importance of exchange of opinion among the justice sector representatives.

    Annual Conference on Legal Ethics

    On September 29-30, USAID/PROLoG-supported Legal Ethics Chair at New Vision University organized the third Annual Conference on Legal Ethics. The event was attended by 120 people on September 29, and 71 on September 30. Participants included professors, judges, judges’ assistants, prosecutors, practitioner lawyers, mediators and students.

    Online Workshop for the High School of Justice of Georgia on Delivering Online Trainings

    On October 2, 2020 USAID/PROLoG, together with the Reno-based National Judicial College (NJC), organized an online workshop for the High School of Justice of Georgia (HSoJ) on preparing and delivering online trainings. The HSoJ has moved all training programs for judges and judicial candidates online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and relies on the Zoom platform for their delivery.

    PHR Protects the Rights of 14 years Old Child with Disabilities

    PHR, under the USAID/PROLoG-funded project “Strengthening Child Access to Justice in Georgia,” was protecting the rights of a 14 years old child with disabilities, who had been placed in a psychiatric hospital since August 28, 2020. According to PHR, due to the lack of adequate services, the child was placed in the hospital, as without this assistance, the family could not protect the child from self-injuries. To ensure his safety, they had to call an ambulance, which took him to a psychiatric hospital, as no alternative was available. At the hospital, he suffered, due to being isolated from his family, and refused to eat without his mother.

    PHR Hosts a Webinar on Children and Digital Security

    On September 30, Partnership for Human Rights (PHR), under the USAID/PROLoG-funded project “Strengthening Child Access to Justice in Georgia,” hosted a webinar on “Children and Digital Security.” 30 children and several parents interested in the topic attended. The goal of the event was to provide children guidance on how to protect personal information. The webinar was conducted by Lili Pulariani, digital communications specialist.
