USAID/PROLoG Supports Judicial Winter School

01 March 2018 Winter School participants working on a group assignment

From February 23-28, USAID/PROLoG together with multiple other donors (EU4Justice, CoE, UNICEF, UNDP, OHCHR) supported the first-ever Judicial Winter School for judicial assistants and employees of the analytical departments at Georgian courts. A total of 25 judicial system employees and five students participated in the Winter School, which offered intensive training on a wide variety of topics, including independence of the judiciary, communication within the court system and with parties, the human rights-based approach to cases, restorative justice, alternative dispute resolution methods, and more.

USAID/PROLoG’s support for the Winter School included contracting local and international experts who delivered sessions on the prohibition of discrimination and related court practice in Georgia, ethical issues of judicial clerks, and a practical session on developing constitutional submissions by the common courts. Judicial Winter School participants had several written assignments and a final examination, after which five winners were selected. With the support of USAID/PROLoG, one of the winners will be given the opportunity to join a judicial study tour to the USA; in addition, the Council of Europe will support a study visit for two winners to the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg, France), and the EU4Justice Judiciary Support project will take two participants to the International Criminal Court at the Hague.
