EWMI/PROLoG Supports Human Rights Training for Judges

29 September 2017 Tbilisi City Court judges Aleksandre Iashvili and Irakli Kopaliani discuss general concepts in human rights

On September 16-17, the High School of Justice organized a training on general human rights concepts for 14 judges from Tbilisi and the regional courts of Georgia. The training program was developed with the support of EWMI/PROLoG and the Council of Europe in 2016, and serves to improve the understanding of Georgian judges in human rights matters, such as classes of rights, horizontal effects of rights, as well as application of human rights instruments and related case law by the Common Courts of Georgia. The training was conducted by two Georgian judge-trainers, Tbilisi City Court judges Aleksandre Iashvili and Irakli Kopaliani, who discussed international and European human rights protection mechanisms, the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, and the practice of Georgia’s domestic courts.

In the coming months, EWMI/PROLoG will update the course to create two independent modules, one for Criminal Law judges and one for Civil/Administrative Law judges.
