Sapari Discusses Hidden Forms of Violence against Women and Girls

19 March 2021 Sapari Conference

On March 17, Union Sapari, under the USAID/PROLoG-funded Protecting Women’s Rights project, organized a conference on "Hidden Forms of Violence against Women and Girls - Economic and Sexual Violence." USAID/PROLoG Chief of Party, Giorgi Chkheidze and Ministry of Internal Affairs Human Rights Department Representative, Giorgi Osadze, made opening remarks, with Giorgi Urchukhishvili, of Sapari moderating the discussion.

Ana Tavkhelidze, PHR, and Tamuna Lukava and Baia Pataraia of Sapari, were the panelists at the discussion. The participants talked about violence against women and girls and its hidden forms, such as sexual and economic violence; violence against children and the problem of interrogation during the investigation and court proceedings; challenges concerning granting the victim status; reporting the offences; and incorrect qualification of the crime in sexual violence cases. They also highlighted the importance of raising awareness of these problems, both with the responsible agencies, as well as with the public. The conference was organized in the framework of Women’s History month, which highlights the contributions and accomplishments of women in history and contemporary society.
