GBA Justice and Judicial Reform Committee meets with USAID/PROLoG Expert Thomas Susman

06 November 2020 GBA Justice and Judicial Reform Committee meets with USAID/PROLoG Expert Thomas Susman

On October 30, 2020 the Georgian Bar Association Justice and Judicial Reforms Committee met online with USAID/PROLoG Expert Mr. Thomas Susman to discuss the recommendations on GBA’s role in the judicial selection process, relevant US experience and future plans.

The Committee chairman and members discussed some of the findings, which include the lack of a unified approach toward candidate review; absence of review criteria; and the need to develop review procedures and a sample questionnaire for interviewing judicial candidates. The expert discussed the role of the American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary and the difference between evaluating Supreme Court and lower court nominees.

At the end of the meeting it was agreed that the Committee will start working on development of a GBA desk book on judicial candidate selection and development of sample questionnaire, which will resonate with the Committee findings. USAID/PROLoG will provide technical and professional support to the Committee.
