GTUC Protects the Rights of Workers Affected by COVID-19

24 September 2020 GTUC Protects the Rights of Workers Affected by COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic still has strong impacts on the lives of many people, especially those working in the street markets and informal trade sector. Borjomi Station Market is an example of a space full of self-employed workers--an open clothing market, where employees rent spaces. These people are working in poor conditions, and the pandemic has made their working environment even harder.

Recently the situation in this specific place got worse, as the landholder demanded a tax increase.

110 people applied to Georgian Trade Unions Confederation (GTUC) for legal assistance, facilitated by a targeted grant from USAID/PROLoG: “Legal Aid for Protection of Workers Affected by COVID-19 Pandemic.” GTUC has been actively involved in negotiations with the market administration for more than a month and provided free legal aid to the workers. On September 11, an agreement was reached not to increase taxes for the workers.

I have been working here for more than 7 years. Money I earned here is the only income for my family of 6 people, including three children. We had to stop working because of pandemic for around two months; after resuming our work, the market administration suddenly increased rent tax, and I was not even able to pay the previous amount. Now, thanks to GTUC taxes will not be increased.

M.D.

L.T also conveys her gratitude to GTUC:

I am the only provider in the family, as my husband died in a very young age. I have 2 children and old parents who need my support on a daily basis. I am happy and grateful to GTUC, who saved my job and family.

With USAID-PROLoG’s support, the project continues to offer legal assistance and protect the rights of people affected by the COVID-19 outbreak in Georgia.
