Georgian Bar Association Chairman, Chief Justice and General Prosecutor Sign Memorandum on the Establishment of the Justice Coordination Council

16 July 2020 Georgian Bar Association Chairman, Chief Justice and General Prosecutor Sign Memorandum on the Establishment of the Justice Coordination Council

On July 16, 2020 the heads of justice sector institutions in Georgia--the judiciary, the Prosecutor’s office and the Bar Association--signed a memorandum on the establishment of the Justice Coordination Council (Bench & Bar). USAID/PROLoG and The Council of Europe supported the establishment of the Coordination Council, which represents a platform enabling judges, prosecutors, and lawyers to discuss important legal matters in an open and cooperative environment.

Mr. Adam Schmidt, the Director of Democracy, Governance & Social Development at USAID, addressed the participants, underlining the importance of institutionalizing bench-bar meetings, which allows agreement on ground, as well as a unified format of this type of meeting. He cited USAID/PROLoG expert Alan Friedman, who reviewed the document and said that “the fair administration of justice is a cornerstone of a society governed by the rule of law. The Bench and Bar have unique responsibilities to work together to ensure that the policies, plans and procedures for the operation of their judicial system improve the quality of justice and promote citizen confidence in that system’s role in resolving their legal disputes.”

Nino Kadagidze, Chairperson of the Supreme Court, Irakli Shotadze, General Prosecutor and David Asatiani, Chairman of Georgian Bar Association, signed the memorandum of cooperation and expressed a readiness to cooperate for better organization of justice and establishment of the rule of law.
