15 May 2020 State Funded Legal Aid Service (LAS) Continues Distance Learning Training

On May 15, 2020 the State funded Legal Aid Service (LAS) continued trainings through USAID/PROLoG grant assistance. The grant aims to support institutional development building the capacity of LAS lawyers.

The second round of training was dedicated to Using the Decisions of ECHR–and was conducted by former judge Irakli Adeishvili. The topics covered included:

  • Scope of application of Article 5 & 8;
  • Lawfulness of detention and authorized deprivation of liberty under Article 5 paragraph 1; Guarantees for persons deprived of liberty; Right to compensation for unlawful detention;
  • The structure of Article 8; Private and family life; home and correspondence;
  • ECHR case law with regard to Georgia; and
  • Using case-law as an additional argument in the courts to increase the quality of the LAS service.

20 LAS lawyers participated in the training. Opening remarks were made by the Deputy LAS Director Nino Meladze and PROLoG Chief of Party Giorgi Chkheidze. Training for a second group of LAS lawyers on this topic is planned for May 22, 2020.

USAID/PROLoG supported its partner organizations, including LAS, to purchase a one-year subscription to Zoom Education, which allowed them to conduct online trainings. Distance education platforms will help LAS to efficiently continue operation and offer its beneficiaries education and training with reduced costs and greater flexibility.
