Training of Trainers in Courtroom Communication and Case Management for Judges

20 February 2020 Judge Baland talks on different aspects of adult learning styles.

On February 18-19, USAID/PROLoG, in cooperation with the High School of Justice (HSoJ), organized Training of Trainers (ToT) in Courtroom Communication and Case Management for civil law judge-trainers. Judge Timothy J. Baland conducted the ToT, focusing on different aspects of courtroom communication and case management, including lawyer and party misbehavior. He also touched upon adult learning styles and teaching methodologies for trainers. The ToT is a continuation of workshops conducted by Judge Baland in the beginning of 2019.

The idea for the training emerged from the mentorship program, when in fall 2018—at PROLoG’s invitation—two US judges observed Georgian judges and provided recommendations to improve the efficiency of the system. Judge Baland designed the course based on his observations in Georgia, personal experience and best practices in the United States. On February 22-23, Judge Baland will also conduct second ToT for administrative law judge-trainers. The course will then be integrated in HSoJ in-service training curricula for sitting judges and in spring HSoJ judge-trainers will conduct pilot trainings under supervision of Judge Baland.
