2019 University Human Rights Week Successfully Completed
13 December 2019
From December 2-10, with the support of USAID/PROLoG, Free University Tbilisi and fourteen other Georgian law schools, including two regional universities, organized the annual University Human Rights Week. Human Rights Week is an annual event that celebrates December 10 as Human Right Day and aims to disseminate knowledge among students and the younger generation.
Participating schools delivered a series of lectures and public discussions. Free University hosted public discussions on the June 20 rally and subsequent protests, as well as the ongoing selection of Supreme Court candidates. USAID/PROLoG also supported several events with the Human Rights Chair at Ilia State University, including a film screening for students and a lesson for school children. Human Rights Week also included the presentation of the 2019 edition of the Human Rights Yearbook, which was started more than a decade ago and funded by USAID/PROLoG. Since its inception, the Yearbook has been run and edited by Konstantine Korkelia, a human rights professor at Tbilisi State University.
The closing ceremony took place at Free University Tbilisi, where an award was given to the organizers of the movement “Sirtskhvilia” and Doctor Vaja Gaprindashvili for protecting Human Rights in 2019. Levan Aleksidze also received an award for his contribution to the development of Human Rights Science.
