USAID/PROLoG supports GBA Conference on Selection of Supreme Court Judges

25 July 2019

On June 23, 2019 the Georgian Bar Association, with support from USAID/PROLoG, organized a conference on “Trusted Judiciary, Democracy and Economic Development” to discuss the ongoing process of selection of Supreme Court Judges in Georgia. To ensure an objective and transparent process plays a crucial role in guaranteeing judicial independence, strengthening the rule of law, increasing public trust and safeguarding the administration of justice in Georgia. The High Council of Justice is currently in the process of interviewing shortlisted candidates. This process, to be continued in the Parliament, is currently under close public scrutiny.

The Conference was opened by the President of the Georgian Bar Association, the Chargé d'affaires of the United States in Georgia and the Chair of the Parliament of Georgia. Panel discussions were then led by the Public Defender, the Chair of Parliament’s Legal Committee, representatives of the opposition party and a representative of the NGO sector. A Supreme Court Judge, the President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Georgia and the Business Ombudsman also spoke.

USAID/PROLoG Expert, Thomas S. Susman, from American Bar Association made a special online presentation about the role of the parliament in ensuring an objective and transparent process for the selection of the Supreme Court Judges.
