Knowledge from Judicial Exchange to the U.S. Shared in Kakheti

10 August 2018 Knowledge from Judicial Exchange to the U.S. Shared in Kakheti

On August 8, Judge Nana Chalatashvili, a civil judge and the former Court Chair of Gurjaani District Court, hosted an information sharing session for judges, magistrates, court staff and Georgian Bar Association representatives from Gurjaani and Lagodekhi districts in Kakheti.

Judge Chalatashvili shared with the 18 participants knowledge that she gained during her April 2018 USAID/PROLoG judicial exchange to New York and Washington, DC. She also told the audience that she changed her court practices as a result of what she learned in the U.S., including that she was now more forceful in encouraging parties to mediate their dispute and willing to tell the parties the probable outcome if they take their case to trial. Neil Weinstein, USAID/PROLoG’s Deputy Chief of Party, answered questions about judicial practices in the U.S. that attendees had submitted in advance, as well as questions from the floor. The event was opened by Rusudan Tabadadze, USAID’s Rule of Law Project Management Specialist.

After the presentation an informal private discussion was held between USAID/PROLoG and the judges and magistrates from Gurjaani and Lagodekhi. They discussed judgeship, the importance of judges taking an active role in moving cases towards a speedy disposition, and the benefits of bench-bar meetings in the region.
