TDI Conducts Informational Meetings with Religious Community and Civil Society Representatives in Kvemo Kartli

09 July 2018 TDI Conducts Informational Meetings in Kvemo Kartli

On June 25, representatives of the Tolerance and Diversity Institute (TDI), under the USAID/PROLoG project “Combating Discrimination on Religious, Ethnic and Racial Grounds,” held informational meetings with local religious communities and representatives of civil society from Gardabani and Rustavi municipalities in Kvemo Kartli. TDI representatives opened each of the meetings with a presentation of the project’s goals and activities, and offered free legal aid to identify and analyze the problems and needs of religious and ethnic communities.

In Rustavi, TDI representatives also met with the founders of the non-governmental organization “Young Life,” which engages young people in educational programs and raises their civic awareness. The organization has faced several obstacles caused by the stereotypical attitudes of some local residents, and TDI provided legal consultation to the members.

In Gardabani, TDI representatives met with members of the local organization “Supporting Georgian Youth and Education Society,” which provides free English language courses for locals and offers scholarships to students from Kvemo Kartli in higher education institutions. The organization’s representative mentioned that they do not have problems with the local government or Christian community, but that early marriage and lower levels of political participation among the locals remain a challenge. TDI representatives also met with Rizman Gakhramanov, an Imam of Gardabani mosque, and talked about the freedom of religion in the region. Mr. Gakhramanov pointed out the property-related problems they face, as the mosque and the house that they use for religious purposes are officially owned by the state.
