Georgian Democracy Initiative (GDI) - Addressing main challenges of Judiciary in 2021

Period/Duration: February 15, 2021 – November 30, 2021

Amount: USD 48,758

Project description: The project aims to ensure transparency of the selection of Supreme Court judges and members of the High Council of justice and promote fundamental judicial reforms. GDI will closely monitor the processes of selection of Supreme Court judicial candidates and HCOJ members. Interviews of Supreme Court candidate held at HCOJ will be publicized through information cards featuring the most thought-provoking questions and answers. After the process moves to the Parliament, GDI will participate in the Committee hearings. The project team will develop introductory videos with candidate biographies and short videos with highlights from the Committee hearings. The cards and videos will be promoted through the Make Courts Trustworthy Facebook page. GDI will also prepare reports assessing judicial candidates and candidates for the membership of HCOJ to allow MPs to make informed decisions. Together with the other members of the Coalition for an Independent and Transparent Judiciary, GDI will also develop and advocate draft legislative amendments addressing the problems of selection of HCOJ members and organize an online conference on this topic. GDI will keep pushing for reforms in different areas of the court system by organizing roundtable discussions. The project will ensure the public oversight and informed decision-making in the processes of selection of Supreme Court judges and members of the HCOJ and contribute to the reforms in crucial areas of the court system.
