Union Sapari - Women Victims of Domestic Violence

Period/Duration:  05.01.2020-06.30.2020

Amount: $5,000

Project description: Sapari will provide access to a free, secure, and discreet mobile helpline for victims of domestic violence, who are under increased duress due to the lockdowns imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the state of emergency. Sapari will translate and adapt a mobile application “Safe You,” which is currently being tested in Armenia. The mobile app enables women in emergency situations to send a free alert message with their geolocation to pre-selected emergency contacts (individuals from her contact list, as well as NGOs or the Police) by pressing a button. The app has an option to hide itself, so that violent partners are not able to detect it, and users can also find and contact NGOs, women’s rights defenders and nearby women’s support and empowerment organizations. Sapari will ensure that the app is fully adapted and operational in Georgia, and will build a network of state institutions, including the police, and women’s rights organizations and professionals to provide support. Sapari will advertise the app and will teach women how to use it. Sapari estimates that around 5000 women will download this app and will use its services during the two-month pilot period.

The project is financed through the COVID-19 Rapid Response Grants Program.
