Georgian Bar Association (GBA) - Support Lawyers to Improve their Involvement in Remote Court Hearings

Period/Duration:  04.21.2020-05.31.2020

Amount: $4,769

Project description: Through this grant assistance GBA will equip its regional offices in Telavi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Batumi with the computers with necessary specifications for the online Webex platform used by the courts in Georgia for distance trials during COVID-19 pandemic. Each regional office will be equipped with 2 computers and relevant accessories. In addition, GBA regional coordinators (office managers) will be trained by the GBA IT Manager how to set-up the program and support the lawyers in need. Due to the spread of COVID-19, the Government of Georgia declared a state of emergency. Among other things, the Decree of the President says that court hearings related to criminal proceedings may be conducted via online platforms. The Decree states that if the court decides to conduct the hearing via online platform, the parties are not allowed to refuse participation in it solely on the ground of being willing to be in the courtroom. In the long run, GBA will use the equipment together with the WebEx platform for Continuous Legal Education trainings as well as for online meetings and conferences.

The project is financed through the COVID-19 Rapid Response Grants Program.
